I did my own little spin on this topic. These aren't necessarily books that I think SHOULD be taught in school, but I think they're topics high school kids should know about. Some of my suggestions are more light-hearted than others.

I'd go for Thirteen Reasons Why. It's a good eye-opener and makes teens more conscious about their actions!

ReplyDeleteHa-ha...to teach kids what will happen if they misbehave. Good one. Wouldn't it be pathetic if we really treated human life as casually as in Hunger Games?

DeleteThe Book Thief was the required historical book in my YA Lit class, and I couldn't finish it. One of the most severely overrated books of modern times.
ReplyDeleteI think more world literature needs taught in schools. It would be great if American high schoolers were as familiar with, say, Japanese, Russian, or Spanish literature as they are with U.S. and British books.
I agree that more world lit should be taught. So many kids are reluctant readers already, though, and I don't know if this would be a help or a hindrance.

ReplyDeleteA big fat YES to Between Shades of Gray and Before I Fall. I adored both of them, and BSoG especially had a huge impact on me. Definitely one everybody should read!

I have Thirteen Reasons and Hunger Games too I think Thirteen Reasons is a book everyone should read to understand how our actions affect others better.

Yeah, I reached a bit there. But I thought that sounded better than: "Kids, this is what happens when your ancestors rebel against the government and you are forced to pay for their sins." :)
