Top Ten: Books That Should Be Taught In School
I did my own little spin on this topic. These aren't necessarily books that I think SHOULD be taught in school, but I think they're topics high school kids should know about. Some of my suggestions are more light-hearted than others.
Holocaust
The Book Thief by Markus Zusak
Genocide: Non-Holocaust
Between Shades of Gray by Ruta Sepetys
Suicide
Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay Asher
School Violence
We Need To Talk About Kevin by Lionel Shriver
Heartbreak
Just One Day by Gayle Forman: (My review is here.)
Bullying
Before I Fall by Lauren Oliver
Surviving the First Year of College
Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell
Surviving an Apocalypse
Not a Drop to Drink by Mindy McGinnis: (My review is here.)
To Teach Kids What Could Happen If They Misbehave
The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins

I'd go for Thirteen Reasons Why. It's a good eye-opener and makes teens more conscious about their actions!
ReplyDeleteThe Hunger Games and The Book Thief made my list too! Btw, I love the layout of your blog--gorgeous.
ReplyDeleteThank you! I'll be losing it soon when I move to WP. But I'm ready for a change!
DeleteYes to Kevin and The Book Thief - both amongst the most powerful books I've ever read.
ReplyDeleteHa-ha...to teach kids what will happen if they misbehave. Good one. Wouldn't it be pathetic if we really treated human life as casually as in Hunger Games?
ReplyDeleteGreat list! The Book Thief would definitely make for an interesting high school read :) And interesting that We Need to Talk About Kevin made your list; I'm still working up the courage/fortification to read it! lol

You should watch the movie, too. They're both amazing and awful.
DeleteThirteen Reasons Why is one of the books that have had a huge impact on me. I think that's a great book for this list. I like how you set your list up. :)

Thank you!
DeleteThe Book Thief was the required historical book in my YA Lit class, and I couldn't finish it. One of the most severely overrated books of modern times.
ReplyDeleteI think more world literature needs taught in schools. It would be great if American high schoolers were as familiar with, say, Japanese, Russian, or Spanish literature as they are with U.S. and British books.
I agree that more world lit should be taught. So many kids are reluctant readers already, though, and I don't know if this would be a help or a hindrance.
DeleteSome great books. I think The Hunger Games and The Book Thief are powerful, important reads.
ReplyDeleteA big fat YES to Between Shades of Gray and Before I Fall. I adored both of them, and BSoG especially had a huge impact on me. Definitely one everybody should read!
ReplyDeleteBooks of Amber
I have Thirteen Reasons and Hunger Games too I think Thirteen Reasons is a book everyone should read to understand how our actions affect others better.

hahah! Love the lesson for THG. So funny. I agree with your selection...honestly I have no clue what they have kids read in school these days.
ReplyDeleteMy Friends Are Fiction
I know - I'm curious now, though!
DeleteThe lesson for The Hunger Games is hilarious... not quite the point of the book, but hilarious XD

Yeah, I reached a bit there. But I thought that sounded better than: "Kids, this is what happens when your ancestors rebel against the government and you are forced to pay for their sins." :)
DeleteI have heard so many things about The Book Thief. I really need to read that book.
ReplyDeleteGreat list! I forgot the Book Thief on my list, such a great book:)
